It’s a kingfisher
convention in our cove! Those birds are incredibly busy and their staccato
chatter was incessant this morning! Better than waking up to freeway noise or a
leaf blower so no complaints here. Checked the pots this morning for our last
pull. One just had two rock crab in it but we think the occupants must have
gotten out because we caught dungies in the same spot yesterday. But the second
pot paid off with three huge males once again! I think we are done crabbing for
awhile. I have created more work for myself because now I need to make a batch
of crabcakes! A long process. As I cooked the crab my knight in shining armor
did all the dirty work of cleaning up the tender which had bait slime, seaweed,
dirt from the bottom, and all sorts of yuk everywhere. He also washed down my
pots and lines and cleaned up everything outside. We are quite a team! Our
shore tie got hung up on the rocks when we tried to release it, so J had to go
to shore and physically remove it, but soon we were underway headed to our next
destination, Lagoon Cove. Time to fire up all the equipment – watermaker,
washer, dishwasher – and then I made the most indulgent brunch – Crabs Egg
Benedict. Such a treat and it should carry us the rest of the day until dinner.
It was already 70 degrees by 9AM so I think we are in for a scorcher today! We
slow cruised to Lagoon Cove where we got the last spot on the linear dock in
front of the office. A little tight of a fit but my master captain made it look
so easy. Even the sailboaters behind us only 6’ exclaimed “great parking job!” I set about cleaning up the boat from our
morning processing, then dove into making our appetizer donation for the
evening, sweet and sour meatballs. Lagoon Cove has a boater happy hour every evening
where the owners provide a bucket load of fresh spot prawns and cocktail sauce,
and the rest of the boaters are supposed to bring an appetizer to share. It is
always a fun and festive gathering on the deck of the old boathouse, with the
evening sun keeping us warm. Everyone at this marina is either on their way
north or south, and everyone has lots of tales to tell about their travels, so
it is always lively. The appys are so plentiful and filling that dinner isn’t
necessary. We played some cards topside until the setting sun was just too hot
to be up there – great problem to have! We retired downstairs and felt somewhat
guilty closing our shades and watching the rest of the Ballard series – good cop
procedural (related to Bosch series) if you haven’t seen it.
