Today we are on one more mission to load up on prawns. We are planning a dock potluck party on Friday night with a large group of friends, so wanted to get a nice amount to share with everyone. So, first thing this morning (after requisite coffee of course) we set the prawn traps. On the way back we checked the crab traps and were rewarded with 5 quite large Dungeness, most of which were 7” or bigger! As we were slowly motoring away from the back cove, I noticed movement on the beach. “John, I think there’s a bear cub on the beach over there!” He said he thought maybe a racoon, because from our vantage point whatever it was looked small. But it was all black so clearly a bear. We turned around and slowly made our way to the beach and realized this was a very young bear, not a cub but couldn’t be any more than a year old. I was thinking that would mean Mom has to be nearby, but we watched the little bear roll rocks for 15 minutes, and no Mom appeared. She taught her baby well though because if it was on it’s own at such a young age, it knew how to feed itself. It rolled huge boulders over like they were nothing and they had to be 50-75 lbs each! Bears are always a thrill for us, and of COURSE I violated my cardinal rule again, never leave the boat without binoculars and good camera, who knew. So these photos attached are a little blurry. Back at the boat and time for some crab cooking, get these babies processed! After they cooled I was going to refrigerate for later picking then thought – what else do I have to do, let’s get ‘er done. Upon finishing it was 1:00PM and time to go check the prawn traps and once again we slayed! 256 count this time. Processed and cleared room in the freezer which was the last little bit of room, our freezer is FULL. Done prawning for the year! We put the crab traps back down again for one more overnight set, then it was time to hit the showers and enjoy the rest of this beautiful afternoon. It had to be 80 degrees out today, and no wind, it was just wonderful!! Cocktail cruise time, we motored over to the next cove over and didn’t really see much except a very pregnant harbor seal on the rocks, and another family of Meganser ducks. We sat topside for the rest of the evening, I didn’t want to give it up until sundown especially since we were the only boat in the bay – everyone else had peeled out this morning. Dinner was steaks on the BBQ, crab and shrimp salad with homemade louis dressing (basically thousand island). It was such a good day.
