JUNE 17, 2022 – PYBUS BAY TO RUTH COVE

SKUNKED AGAIN. Except today we almost could have made dinner out of all the baby halibut in our traps! We did catch about 4 crab, 3 of which could have been keepers but each one was soft shelled so we tossed them back. Such a bummer, disappointing.

We pulled the anchor around 10:30 and made our way for today’s destination, Ruth Cove, which is about 20nm northwest of Petersburg, which is where we are going tomorrow. We had a beautiful crossing day with calm seas and warm sun, I think we are amidst a mini-heatwave. We arrived in Ruth and ended up choosing a spot near the Cascade Creek waterfall in a tiny cove that shallowed up enough for us to set the hook. Most of the channel is way too deep to anchor. We cruised the bay as usual and cooked up some of John’s ling cod from Sitka for dinner, some cod piccata, or as I liked to say “pic-cod-da” yes I’m so funny. The commercial crabbers are also in here at the shoreline but I just can’t imagine Dungeness coming in here at 700’ and migrating to the shoreline where it’s 60’. But what do I know, I haven’t been very successful lately.

Our handsome skipper

Pybus Bay is just so stunning!
