Another
beautiful morning! We are so lucky to have this sunshine. This morning we are
making our way to Scenery Cove (at the head of this bay) before heading over to
Petersburg. The mountains are out again in all their glory and it’s glassy
smooth once more. Scenery Cove is near another tidewater glacier but one we
can’t get to in our boat, but caught a glimpse of it. Passing over the shallow
bar out of Ruth Cove to cross Frederick Sound we see boats fishing for halibut
and others trolling for salmon just north of the city. Big fat seals and sea
lions populate the channel markers going into the narrows by Petersburg,
barking at us as we cruise by. Today we had to fuel up because Esperança is
EMPTY. And so is the boston whaler. So that’s what we do before checking into
our slip for the night. I was in charge of fueling the whaler while John did
the big boat. I was facing the shore perpendicular to the channel while I
fueled. All of a sudden John yells “wave” and I turn around just in time to
receive the wake of some jerk that floored it past the gas dock, but worse…a
bunch of water slops into the whaler fuel tank (and all over me too), so that’s
not good. John later had to go buy some water separating fuel filters and we hope
that the water is not going to cause issues for us later. After fueling we got
settled into our slip, plugged into shore power, filled with water and then set
off to walk the small town. First up was the Fisherman’s Memorial Park where
there is a commemorative plaque for each member of the community lost at sea
and there were many. It has a beautiful bronze statue of a fisherman. Next door
is the Sons of Norway Hall, and since John and I are both of Norwegian descent,
it was interesting. Petersburg is a very neat and tidy little town but there is
not much here at all in terms of a town. There are no restaurants for evening
dining at all except for a food truck, one take out pizza place and one that
would deliver. They do have coffee houses and lunch spots, a few clothing
shops, hardware store, small grocery, and a couple art/gift shops, oh and a
book store. That is it for the town! But the people here obviously take good
care of things, mow their lawns and yards are well kept. What we really noticed
is the pride the fishing fleet takes in maintaining their vessels. They all
have beautiful fresh paint jobs and orderly decks, it is quite impressive. We
had wanted to go out for dinner here for a break from my cooking but since it
was such slim pickings we opted for homemade pizza and salad on the boat.
