JUNE 16, 2022 - SNUG COVE TO PYBUS BAY

Awoke to blue skies and sunny, warm temps! It was so warm I had to put on a t-shirt at 9AM. Pulled the pots with Len, and we were completely skunked except for a sunstar and a rock crab. DANG IT. The crabbing has been really disappointing this year. We pulled anchor and decided to head to a new location for the day and ended up having a gorgeous topside cruise, with the bimini down, to the stunning Pybus Bay, which (I think) has one of the most beautiful snow bowls in all of Alaska. The snow fields drip down the side of the sharp peaks like white daggers, while the beautiful chartreuse deciduous trees line the wet fall lines in between the rows of pines, it just has it all in my opinion. We put the crab pots down – again – because the crabbing was really good when we were here 4 years ago, and there were many pots already down. Surely this time we will have luck? Being low on fish parts for bait I used a couple of my shrimp bait cylinders, because they too are very stinky, so we will see what that yields. Afterwards we cruised over to the Pybus Point Lodge and talked to the manager over there, who said that business is booming for them. They’ve constructed a new floating fish house for processing their customers’ catch. We inquired if they would let us tour the facility, but he said since they were completely full he couldn’t do that. Sounds like if we inquire ahead of time that maybe we could get dinner there? Not sure. OH, I almost forgot, on the way into Pybus Bay we witnessed a massive eagle convention as they dove and fed on the surface of the water, then perched on a couple different rocks and in the trees. Little white heads everywhere! And a whale was also feeding in and among the small islets and did a full body out-of-the-water breach for us! It was quite the welcome to Pybus. Anyway, on our afternoon cruise we went back out to where the eagles were still feeding, turned off the engine and just drifted and watched for about a half hour. So fun! We enjoyed a nice long social hour topside before dinner, basking in the warm sun and luckily very few horse flies. What a lovely day and evening.

Gorgeous cruising day!
