JUNE 15, 2022 – TRACY ARM TO SNUG COVE

Good bye Lucky Dog….we’ve had the best journey with you. Lucky Dog cast off around 6AM as they were on a more expedited trip back home, hoping to arrive by early July. The weather is dry but very cold! 44 degrees again this morning. But we are happy with no rain. Today we had planned to go do Ford’s Terror which is in Endicott Arm right around the corner. Ford’s terror has a place mid passage where you absolutely have to hit high slack to get through. High slack wasn’t until 4PM which meant we would have to wait around to get into Ford’s Terror that afternoon, then we’d have to turn around and wait until around 4PM the next night to get out of Ford’s Terror, with nowhere close to anchor for the night except Entrance Cove, where we’d already spent two nights. So, after calculating all the time we’d have to dedicate to one destination, we decided to move along and chose Snug Cove (Gambier Bay) as our next destination. We had a really nice cruise down to Snug but were unpleasantly surprised by the number of horse flies here! It was also inundated with crabbers as June 15th is opening day of crabbing season. We set our anchor in the middle of the smaller of the two Snug Cove bays amongst the crab pots but plenty of room and distance from them. We also set crab pots thinking that the commercial crabbers must know something! A while later a crab fisherman circled back into our cove and set down a pot so close to our boat that it was in danger of getting wrapped in our prop, but it seemed to be an aggressive move by the fisherman demonstrating his displeasure at us being in “his” bay because that was the only one he set near our boat. This cove has a drying shoal between us and the head of the bay that is pretty impressive, going from our anchorage at about 60’ depth, to a depth of 12’ just 20 yards behind us. It was high tide in the early evening so we went on our nightly cocktail cruise way into the back bay, sometimes at depths as low as 4’ and had fun exploring. No bear sightings which was surprising! Dinner of Cumin Roasted Salmon with Cilantro Pesto, Portuguese Rice, and Greek Salad, followed by music and dancing while doing the dishes, another festive evening!
