Day 24 – Fools Inlet to Berg Bay – June 5, 2018

Today we are heading to Berg Bay as we continue our trek north towards Wrangell. Berg Bay claims to have excellent shrimping just outside the mouth of the bay so we are going to try our luck once again. This morning we saw a group of travelers in canoes on shore – it looks as though they are on an outdoor adventure as the canoes are packed with gear and they are all outfitted in full rubber rain gear. Saw another whale today which seems to be our new normal. He surfaced right next to the boat, and of course we cut the engines and glided to a stop, cameras poised, and after waiting 5 minutes gave up on him resurfacing and went along our merry way.  We cruised by the Anan Observatory site this morning, and nearly ended up on the sandbar. It went from 90 feet to 3 feet almost immediately and once again, our chart did not reflect this transition. Guess that’s why they all carry the disclaimer on them that you can’t rely on them 100%. Disaster averted.  Spent the night in Berg Bay, a gorgeous setting here with permanent snowfields surrounding us and a super lush mountain right behind us that has the most beautiful chartreuse slopes when the sun hits it just right, flanked by pine and spruce trees and dotted with the snowfields and waterfalls snaking down its bowl-like center. We had an absolutely glorious late afternoon into evening as the sun shone bright and hot. If Shannon was here she would have been in her bikini working on her tan. I’m sure she was somewhere. Shannon and David and their boys supposedly left Ketchikan on Monday or Tuesday headed for Wrangell for our next rendezvous on Thursday or Friday. We haven’t had any cell service since leaving Ketchikan so have no way to communicate with one another unless we get in VHF radio range. Perhaps we will see them before tomorrow, or not….but we know we will reunite in Wrangell in a day or two. Ashley and Jeff fly out Thursday afternoon from Wrangell.
