We are transiting the east side of Wrangell Island on this leg of our
trip. Tomorrow we motor into Wrangell
for a night or two of civilization and cell service! I can only imagine the
endless pinging and dinging when our phones erupt with nearly a week’s worth of
communications. It is nice to be off the
grid in some respects but I sure miss talking to my people, friends and family,
and hearing their news. We pulled the shrimp pots yesterday after 2 hours just
to make sure there are shrimp in the area as reported, and yes….we have
evidence they are there. We decided to leave the pots out overnight to see what
would happen and will go check them when the rain subsides. Today I am trying
my hand at sourdough pancakes. I was lucky to receive a portion of very well
established sourdough starter from a friend, so when I bring it to life it is
very active. This morning I have about 4 cups of starter to work with and a
recipe for hotcakes from a book called Alaska Sourdough. Hope my crew likes
them! Pulled the pots and had GIANT prawns, but just a few – enough for an
appetizer. When we come back this way we will work the area some more and try
to get a bigger haul. We had a couple decapitated shrimp in our pot and were
told by a neighboring boat that it is the octopus that get their tentacles on
them and eat them! Fun Fact. Since it’s been pouring rain all day, and our
intended next stop was less protected, we decided to spend another night here.
It’s stunningly beautiful even through the rain. My favorite spot so far this trip.
Just one more picture in this harbor, the backdrop is so stunning |
Our HAUL from the pots, just enough for appetizers! These were two bite prawns |
