Day 13 – At Anchor in Klewnuggit – May 25, 2018

Woke up to pouring rain today and it never stopped except for brief intermissions of no more than 5-10 minutes at a time and few and far  between.  After a lazy morning, the rain appeared to subside so Shannon, Cathy, and I donned our rain gear and rubber boots and decided to venture out and set the shrimp pots once again and check the crab pots we left overnight.  After interminable time setting the 5 shrimp pots (we were stalking the commercial shrimper and placing pots strategically around each of his) we then moved over to see what was in the crab pots. We had set them overnight in the south bay of Klewnuggit called the “exposed anchorage” or something like that. Anyway, we netted 9 keepers!  I spent the afternoon cooking and picking all the crab. At 4 we went back out to check the shrimp pots in the pouring rain bundled up in my fleece lined leggings under jeans, and under my full on rubber rainsuit with scarf and gloves. The rain was like ice pellets on our faces as we raced out to our pots in the tender. Sadly all our efforts only yielded 11 shrimp out of 5 pots. Very puzzled as the commercial shrimper had several pots out as well, surely we should have gotten more than that! I think this area actually has good shrimping but it must have been wiped out by the commercial boats. We had some “challenges” with the new pot puller and took us 4 tries to get it to coil correctly without also sucking in the end of the line. We had a good chuckle over that and decided not to tell the boys how stupid we were, but Shannon blurted it out over dinner and ruined the pact.  For dinner I made Jambalaya with pancetta, sautéed onion, sausage, and all the best crab leg meat I could pick. We paired it with greek salad only because the ingredients is just what we have left in the fridge – I am out of lettuce – and Cathy made cornbread muffins. Tomorrow we pull anchor and head for the big city, Prince Rupert. Cell service, grocery stores, restaurants….wow, civilization. The past week we’ve been in some remote territory but I don’t miss the connectivity, I welcome the break. I would come here again, such a beautiful place.

KEEPERS! Worth the wait

Shannon and Cathy SO excited to go pick the pots in the pouring rain

Bundled up for the rain pelting my face enroute to our pots
