Scott, Lisa and I got up early and drove to the hatchery (again, we did
see bears there 4 years ago) to see if there were any bears at low tide but I
think there is too much commotion because of the construction going on at the
bridge over the creek that runs by the hatchery right through the beach and
empties into the ocean. We saw a bunch of guys fishing right at the mouth of
the creek from the beach and from boats right offshore, catching the hatchery
kings – they had a special opening where you could catch up to 4 I think and
they didn’t count towards your limits. Too bad we didn’t have a little more
time today or we’d be down there too! But Scott, Lisa, and I are all flying out
on the 2:50PM flight. We continued on and visited the Saxman Village where
there is a longhouse and gift shop and totems. Then we drove out to Totem
Bight, another totem and longhouse village beautifully situated right on the
shoreline, a gorgeous park if you are visiting Ketchikan. After lunch at one of
our favorite spots, Alaska Fish House, we loaded our luggage into the whaler
and John drove us over to the dock at the airport – I mean how many airports
can you think of where you arrive by boat! If not personal craft you have to
take a ferry from the mainland. I think I may have written about this earlier
in my blog, but it is truly unique. I am flying home for 24 hours for a
doctor’s appointment and to retrieve our mail and a few other errands. I booked
the ticket a long time ago and used miles so it’s just a quick hop and doesn’t
cost much.
