Well…..Cape
Caution retains its status as my least favorite crossing. About two hours in we
finally got to the open water and were greeted by ocean swells that built up
over the 9 hour run sometimes to 8-10’ we estimated. On the plus side, the
water was glassy and smooth most of the way so while it was a very safe
crossing, the motion of the giant swells took me down and I got seasick, the
only relief being horizontal and down below where we had the least motion.
About 12:30 I woke up to smoothness and emerged from my stateroom famished. The
last two hours of our trip were up the inside of Calvert Island on our way to
Pruth Bay, which is where we landed around 2:30PM, Anchor down, Lucky Dog
snugged up to us, engines finally off, and glorious sunshine in our cute little
cove. On the way up the channel to our anchorage we spotted a giant triangular
marker that didn’t seem to be moving, but oh, yep, it’s alive! A large orca was
slowly grazing the channel, with gentle movements rather than typical “on a
mission chasing something” type action.Since they are usually hunting salmon or seals or other whales, we wondered why he was just in a state of apparent rest and all alone. Took a few pictures which of course were always a half a second too late so no spy-hopping or tail shots, just a splash ring. Back at the boat, Shannon and I immediately retrieved our crab traps and lines and set off on our first big hunt. We each laid down two and will leave them overnight hopefully netting enough for dinner tomorrow! As we crossed the channel to lay traps on the other side of the bay, the orca appeared again, then with one deep dive he was gone. Before dinner we took a lovely cocktail cruise around the bay in which we are anchored, drinking in the sunshine as we are all Vitamin D starved, having spent the last week mostly in the rain. Shannon made her delicious Moroccan Carrot Salad and Fettuccini Alfredo, for dinner but the highlight was her homemade bread which she proofs in the engine room on running days! Perfect evening, early to bed for this kid.
