MAY 15, 2022 – KETCHIKAN

Awoke with a start at 6:30AM with a loud vibration/humming noise invading our peaceful stateroom. John searched the boat stem to stern trying to figure out the origin, and finally concluded it was emanating from the cruise ship that just arrived next to us. Such an unfortunate way to wake up especially on a non-running/sleep-in kind of day! Actually I woke at 4:30 to the sound of the eagles conversing, just love the cadence of their voices. Today it’s absolutely POURING and the cloud cover is low. How lucky we got to experience yesterday’s sunshine and warm temperatures. This morning the boys went to go pickup the rental car we reserved while we are here. Makes the errands and grocery runs a bit simpler. We also have plans to site-see while we are here. Shannon has to fly home briefly on 5/17, returning the morning of 5/19, at which time we will cast off and continue our journey. For now, we are in the big city. Today’s task for Shannon was an afternoon at the laundromat – Ketchikan now only has one laundromat facility so it’s very busy there. John and I shopped for dishwasher parts and stocked up on wine for the next few weeks since there was a good wine store here. Briefly stopped in at Safeway and found many items sold out, so I hope it’s restocked by the time I have to reprovision the boat later this week. It will be a 10 day trip to Sitka from here, and otherwise out in the very remote wilderness with no towns or facilities. This afternoon we hooked up with fellow boaters and MBYC members Bill and Kim Halley at that Sourdough Bar for beers and pool. We had a jovial visit and lively pool competition of the women against the men, with the men barely squeaking by 2-1 after 3 games. We had planned to grab pizza afterwards somewhere but both pizza joints were closed Sunday night, so we made homemade pizza back at the boat, preceded by some card playing. Our eagle friends must have smelled the pizza because they landed on Lucky Dog next to us, and also on the pilings in front of the boat. We didn’t feed them of course!

This is why we passed by Prince Rupert
