Woke up to thick fog but no rain! Hallelujah! We
got off to an early start at slack tide so that we could transit Reid Passage,
which is narrow and shallow, as we continue our journey south. The morning was
uneventful and smooth until right outside Bella Bella when the bay erupted with
a dozen orcas that were feeding! They put on quite the show, it was
spectacular. I thought I was taking a video of them when in fact I later
discovered that it was in the off position so didn’t record. Very disappointing
as I would have had a lot of great footage. I fired off some still shots and
got a few good ones, even though they are a little grainy. It was quite
thrilling! We are anchoring tonight at the north side of Hecate Island which is
right off Hakai Passage, where the big salmon are supposed to be running. Tomorrow morning we will do some fishing
unless John gets inspired this evening. Sunday we are heading to Duncanby
Landing, a fishing resort in River’s Inlet, where we will stay for a day or two
before we embark on the next major crossing of Cape Caution. Lots of Humpback
sightings again today, they are definitely feeding here in Fitz Hugh Sound.
