Day 61 – Berg Bay to Vixen Harbor – July 12, 2018

A very rainy morning, not just sprinkling, but raining. In between the worst of the downpours, John and Beth went out to fetch the pots because my hip is just getting too painful. We snagged a ton of crab and saved 7 keepers, and they also pulled in 11 giant prawns, enough for an appetizer! One of these days hopefully the prawn pots will have more than an appetizer. I think it’s pretty overfished up here. We cooked everything immediately, then Marc and I shelled all the crab on our run down to Vixen Harbor. Crab Louis Salads for lunch! Vixen Harbor has a super tricky entrance on one side, and the chart shows that it’s not navigable on the other side. It was down to 3’ in some places on the way in – a little scary in a big boat! But John did an excellent job picking his way in, and now we are anchored in a beautiful bay all by ourselves. Later we took the whaler out for an exploration ride and discovered the supposed unnavigable side was actually no less than 9’ deep at mid low tide, so tomorrow we will go back out that way instead. It’s amazing how many times our charts have been off. We have 3 different GPS charting systems, and all 3 show the same thing. Anyway, it was a beautiful afternoon so Beth, who loves swimming, decided she needed to go for a dip. She jumped off the back of the boat twice and had her breath taken away – colder than she expected! She said it gave her a bit of a brain freeze. She loved it though; she swims whenever she has the opportunity at home, so she was up for the challenge! Tonight we had chilled prawns and cocktail sauce for appetizers - they were so sweet!  Tonight is our last day at anchor before heading into Ketchikan tomorrow. This week has flown by.

So our chart says the only passable route is the black dotted line, which is the way we came into Vixen. Actually the part I drew in with red pen is MORE passable with deeper water, but it shows it's aground at low tide. It's not. All our charts said the same thing. We were lucky
