∞Another
scorcher of a day, we woke up to brilliant sunshine and warm temperatures, just
glorious! We decided to come back into Sitka to the dock a day early because
John has parts that will arrive today or tomorrow and he needs time to fix
whatever he is fixing, I think it’s the water maker this time. It was so warm
that we ran from the fly bridge – we just have to take advantage of the
opportunity whenever we can get it! The weather is supposed to turn tomorrow
and the rain is coming back just in time for our next guests, Marc and Beth
Droppert, who arrive Saturday afternoon. Darn! Hope it changes again….
∞The
latest Alaska-themed book I am reading is called “Tip of The Iceberg” by Mark
Adams. The author recently retraced the steps of a voyage that happened in 1899
when a wealthy tycoon named Edward Harriman decided that Alaska needed
exploring, so he gathered the country’s top scientists and writers including
anti-capitalist and eco-warrior John Muir, who had already “discovered” Glacier
Bay’s glaciers some 20 years earlier. The author goes back and forth between
his present day trip around Alaska and tales from the Harriman adventure of
1899. It is really engaging and well written and I am enjoying immensely, I
highly recommend, whether you’ve been to Alaska or not.
∞Dinner tonight was at
“Beak” a quirky little restaurant here in Sitka that seems to cater to an
eclectic artsy crowd. It felt kind of like a blast back in time to the 60’s or
current day hippie Orcas Island type place. The food was interesting and there
was a string quartet playing during dinner, kind of bluesy music. The quartet
consisted of a mandolin, violin, bass and acoustic guitar. Wine was served in
mason jars.
