Day 40 – Elfin Cove to Hoonah – June 21, 2018

The boys went salmon fishing this morning but sadly came back empty handed. The fish just aren’t quite running yet. Regardless, I think they enjoy just getting out in the boat, hot coffees in their insulated mugs, and having their male bonding time. Dianne made her famous Swedish Pancakes this morning, something the family absolutely loves. She kindly has shared her recipe below.
We cast off for Hoonah about 11AM. Another beautiful day allowed us to be topside for most of the afternoon. We have been incredibly lucky with the weather and I hope it continues.
I want to tell you about the next book I just finished called “The Grizzly Maze” which is by the same author as “A Wolf Called Romeo” Nick Jans. It is his account through research of the fatal mauling of Tim Treadwell and his girlfriend back in 2003 on the Katmai coast which is near Kodiak, Alaska. Although it was a tragic event, the book delves into the lives and habits of Grizzly Bears and it is another fascinating study of the wild animals of Alaska. The book itself doesn’t dwell or get into the gory details too much, it’s more about why Treadwell chose to camp during the summers for 13 years in the middle of the Grizzly population, right at the intersection of a number of known grizzly trails (thus the “maze”). It also delves into the habits and traits of Grizzlies, the story of the follow-up investigation, and an overall discussion about the dangers of humans acclimating bears to human presence, for both humans and bears alike. Good book.

RECIPEDianne’s Swedish Pancakes (Crepes) – Ingredients: 1-3/4 c. Flour, 1/4 c. powdered sugar, 5 to 6 eggs, approximately 1 c. milk, butter, white sugar, fresh lemon. With a wire whisk, mix flour, powdered sugar, and eggs together first, then add in the milk while whisking until batter is quite thin. Cook in large skillet over medium to medium high heat, spray skillet with cooking spray or brush with scant amount of vegetable oil, add a scoop of batter and rotate pan around to make batter spread out. Brown both sides, then serve with butter, sprinkle of sugar, and squeeze of fresh lemon. Roll up and enjoy! PS – Jam or fresh fruit are good to roll up too.

Kids got a lot of rest this week
