Woke
up to pouring rain this morning, bummer after yesterday’s beautiful day. Pulled
out of Cannery Cove for the 6 hour run up to Taku Harbor which is just 20 miles
shy of Juneau. On our way as we passed the cutoff for Tracy Arm we saw our
first icebergs! They were pretty far in the distance so at first we thought
they were very white oddly shaped boats. Upon further inspection through the
binoculars, we were delighted to see they were beautiful blue icebergs. It is
wise to keep your distance from bergs because what you see sticking out of the
water is likely a fraction of what’s beneath (probably where the saying came
“it was just a tip of the iceberg”). Of course we will see more as we venture
into Glacier Bay, but it was exciting nonetheless. I spent the morning cracking
all the crab we caught the day before and then made crab louis salads for lunch
– never tire of those! Arriving in Taku
Harbor we were able to secure moorage on a public use float which was in the
bay but no shore access. It was anchored with driven pilings so very secure for
overnight. It was big enough for 4 boats. As we approached Taku Harbor a small
humpback was feeding along the shoreline in the entrance, so as soon as we were
all tied off Shannon and I hopped in the whaler hoping to get more whale
viewing but it was already gone. We had a delicious dinner on Lucky Dog of
Shannon’s homemade Chicken Mole over rice, played some Mexican Train, then
watched the first installment of Band of Brothers, which John and I have never
seen.
