Well we’ve yet to see a bear, and this bay seems
like it should be ripe for bears. I’ll keep hoping. Shannon reported that they
got to watch a grizzly feed on shore down where they anchored in Santa Ana Bay,
so I’m jealous! They turn over rocks this time of year and feed on the crabs
and shellfish and whatever sea life resides under the rocks, so many times you
can see them at low tide. John and I ventured out this morning to check our
pots, starting with the shrimp pots. As we were pulling the pots (which were
empty) a local motored up to us and told us a better spot to put them so we placed
them where he told us (spoiler alert: 2 shrimp). Then he told us our crab pots
were also in the wrong place and told us where to go then added “if you don’t
get any, just pull my pots and take what you want, they are always full.”
Luckily for us a few hours later our crab pots were also packed! I had at least
15 of legal size but half were soft shell, so I tossed them back to finish
their growing cycle and we don’t need that much crab anyway. Dungeness Crab
seem to be in every cove we stay in, which is amazing. It is plentiful! We had
a gorgeous day with a scant 15 minutes of light shower only once. The local
mountain man we met said the halibut weren’t around here yet (not sure where
they come from) so we tried our hand at salmon fishing but skunked there too.
But not a waste of time at all, because there were humpback whales everywhere
we looked today. One was surfing the shoreline near where we were anchored,
another 3 in the distance were blowing and breaching, and yet another was out
near where we were fishing. It is so hard to get a decent picture of the whales
so I just watch and enjoy them instead. Shannon and David showed up around
3:30pm today so our traveling pals are back for another week. We had dinner
with them, another slab of the first salmon John caught which I had frozen,
roasted broccoli and shallots, and my homemade Caesar salad. Nope not giving
out that recipe, sorry!!
