Happy Birthday John! 63 trips around the sun and looking so handsome. It is seriously pouring rain today yet again, the ceiling is low, it’s 50 degrees, chilly! Today the Wardens arrive around 9:30 for a week with us on Esperança. John headed out to pick them up while I made a quiche and cinnamon rolls for their welcome brunch. A couple of last minute items needed, we set off on one last trip to Costco and Fred Meyer. I needed a pack of lunchmeat, Len needed potato chips and Stephanie needed socks! And, of course, we picked up a few bottles of wine to add to our collection. We spent the afternoon wandering the shops and galleries as it was our last day to make a decision on any artwork, but we just didn’t find anything that really spoke to us. Stephanie needed a new raincoat (because it is just soaking us all here) so we found an outdoor store where she picked up a new Patagonia and Shannon shopped for ski clothes. After an afternoon nap/respite on the boat, we headed out for our evening to celebrate John’s birthday. First stop was the Red Dog Saloon, where we began the evening with Duck Farts (a shot that contains a bottom 1/3 of Kahlua, middle third of Baileys Irish Cream, and top 1/3 Crown Royal). It’s a shot you have to down all at once as it is layered and not mixed, so only when you toss it back do you get the full melody of flavors. Dinner at SALT was next on the agenda, and we had a cozy table off in the corner all to ourselves where we enjoyed a fabulous meal – thanks to the Wardens and to Shannon, David, and Cathy (their friend from Seattle that had to abort her visit in Hoonah) for treating us. The rain was only lightly misting on the walk home, hallelujah! Tomorrow, we get to leave and get back in the wilderness and I am so ready. I won’t miss the constant hum of cruise ships arriving and departing, the hordes of people swarming the city, but it was nice for a few days ashore to get the essentials taken care of.
Great adventures!
