6AM
Sunny skies again this morning! In fact, not a cloud in sight, with the hills
surrounding us appearing as sparkling reflections in the still water. Shannon
and I are pulling pots soon so we can get the boats all situated for today’s
trip to Sitka. The Sergius Narrows are slack at 10:15 approximately so we need
to leave by around 9:30. I am really looking forward to Sitka as it is the
prettiest town of all the majors (Ketchikan, Juneau, Wrangell) with the most to
do. Picked the pots this morning and yielded a collective 3 keepers. Tons of
females though so that’s a good sign. We will try again next week when we pass
back through but for now that is a few great crab salads for us for lunch this
week! Had another stellar day on the water enroute to Sitka, very scenic and
increasing boat activity as we approached the area. With Mt. Edgecumbe towering
in the distance with its artful snowfields, it just felt so welcoming to arrive
here. Sitka is just so pretty and so charming with all the fishing vessel and seaplane activity, eagles hovering around like common barn swallows, and salty
characters on the docks. We fueled up before we docked at our slip since it was
sunny without a breath of wind – who knows what it will be like in a few days
when we depart. This is the stop where John had planned to change the oil, so
with the engines warm ( and warm oil) he set to work to accomplish that task,
which takes an hour or two. I sorted garbage and laundry, and filled the boat
with water. We do have a water maker onboard that we run frequently but when in
port we just use the hose. Everyone has connectivity now so we are all getting
our online tasks accomplished as well. I was finally able to access AK fish and
game website and get my shrimping permit – back in business! John was quizzing
the locals and found out that King Salmon fishing is open so he’s already scheming
to go out fishing tomorrow morning. Sitka (of course) is on the Gulf of Alaska
so we are at the open water, which means he won’t have to go far to the fishing
grounds, but he will be out there in the big swells. I am so glad for him to
finally be able to get to fish the outside! I think that will be the main pastime
the next five days we are here. We plan to walk up town later this afternoon
for some shopping around and will probably grab a bite out for dinner. It is 73
degrees here and t-shirt weather! Hey family and friends – I just opened my
email and have no news from you! Reading my blog you have all my news but I
would love to hear from you about what’s going on back home so write to me this
summer please!! Can’t believe it’s almost been a month out already. Happy Memorial Day weekend!
