MAY 23, 2022 – PORT PROTECTION TO RED BLUFF BAY

As usual, I started tossing and turning around 2:30-3:00AM knowing that the alarm was going to go off at 4:15! Was trying to be super stealth so that the captain wouldn’t wake up as we need him to be on his game today. Right on schedule, the disassembly process began at 4:30, first casting off Lucky Dog who was rafted to us, then pulling our anchor and releasing the tender, which we tow behind. I am hoping the residents of the bay aren’t too angry with us for all the noise but I have to believe they are used to the sound of rumbling engines at odd hours given that their industry is fishing. We motored out of Port Protection into Sumner strait and were greeted by rain and fog and lumber everywhere, so it’s a game of frogger to get across to the entrance of Keku Strait.

UPDATE: I can now report we successfully transited Rocky Pass and are at the top of Keku Strait about to head into Frederick Sound, for a left turn to cross Chatham Strait, and heading for our overnight stay in Red Bluff Bay. Keku and Rocky Pass was actually pretty straightforward and we have excellent captains at the helm, so absolutely no issues. Many times the depth was under 20', the lowest we had in our journey was 13' and it was high tide.

Not sure if I’ll have service again soon, but at this moment we are passing by the town of Kake and I have a few bars to post. More later on the rest of today's journey to Red Bluff Bay.

Here are some views within Rocky Passage, no these are not set to be Black and White Photos, this was actual view this morning!

Rock reefs everywhere

Narrow passages and lots of markers to follow

Lucky Dog ahead of us executing all the necessary turns
