I just finished reading a book I bought here in Ketchikan called “Beyond the Bear” which is a story of Dan Bigley, a young man out of the Anchorage area that was mauled and blinded by a bear in 2003. He was fishing in a popular fishing hole along with many other anglers at the time, but a Mama Bear decided to put her cubs up a tree on the path to the fishing hole, and he and his friend were walking back to the car when this massive sow came running at them, first knocking his dog off the trail with a swipe of her paw, then hip checking his friend off the trail, when she made a beeline for Dan. The book is the story of his recovery and how he didn’t dwell on who he used to be (a sighted person) rather he focused on creating his new life. While it doesn’t sound like cheerful reading, I was captured by his story of renewal, recreating a meaningful life after such a devastating accident, so the book is more about that. It is very worthwhile reading if one ever thinks their own problems are so great. What he accomplished is truly remarkable. Next up is a book called “Home is Where the Fish Are” – a book written by a woman who was a commercial fisherman by profession and taught high school in the off season.
Shannon
and David fly back this morning at 9:20AM, then they will fuel up and we will
all be on our way. Glad to be moving off the dock today, and it appears we have
some great weather ahead for the next couple days. Very excited about that. Today
we head somewhere, not sure where yet, will report later! Really unsure of when
we will have service again so might not be any updates for awhile. Stay well
everyone.
