Beth, Marc and John decided to get up early today and go for a 6am sunrise river cruise. It is really cold in the mornings so this did not sound compelling to me and I opted for staying in bed and watching the sunrise from that vantage point. Coffee was delivered to my room at 630 so I just hunkered down in my happy cozy place and watched and listened as the river creatures and birds came to life. Outside my open air hut the river lazily makes its way around the reeds and trees on its path to Victoria Falls, about 15km downstream. The birds start talking to each other early in the morning to almost a deafening roar. One bird sounds as though it is just doing a soft whistle and others like the doves coo incessantly. After breakfast and showers we opted for a trip to town to visit the local farmers market and craft market. The farmers market was fascinating, a bustling enterprise filled with locals purchasing their vegetables, fruits, beans and grains. The women all wear very colorful clothing, mainly skirts and sarongs with a bright tee shirt. The fabric here is gorgeous! Next was the craft market which unfortunately was filled with 60+ vendors all selling mostly the same items. I was really looking for authentic crafts made by locals and there seemed to be few of those products. After a failed attempt to ship some stuff home (we balked at DHLs $200 quote) we headed back to the lodge and hopped into the boat for the island. Enroute our guide pulled into a little cove and we were surprised to see a beautiful lunch set out for us! So incredibly sweet of our dear server “Nasson” to plan this surprise for us! The rest of our afternoon was spent napping, reading, playing cribbage, and for me sorting pictures. Tomorrow we leave for our next destination which requires 2 flights, we should arrive by 1:00pm.
