Day 72 – Duncanby Lodge (River’s Inlet) – July 23, 2018

John got up at 5 this morning and went out fishing. My hip is bothering me too much this morning to want to go adventuring so I stayed behind. He loves to get out there alone and commune with nature anyway, so he’s having fun even if I’m not so much. Around 8AM he came back with a small king salmon so we have another addition for our freezer. It was so brilliant yesterday with no clouds and bright sun from about 3PM to Sunset, so am hoping that pattern repeats today as it is completely overcast and misty this morning.  We met some super nice people last night from Seattle (SYC members) that are with a group of 8 Grady White owners zipping all over the area adventuring and fishing. They also have a 53’ Selene at home but they said when they want to “play” they take out the Grady White as they can be just about anywhere in no time at all. Sounds like fun! He was telling us that one year he and a group of Grady Whites took their boats all the way to Ketchikan, his being a 22’ Grady! That is definitely adventuresome. The afternoon was very productive! Mr. Madden came back to the boat with two really nice fish which we processed and froze, and he also had a “fish tale” of the big one that got away. He had hooked up a big fish that took off with the line, so he was working it, reeling when he could and letting him run when he wanted. The fish took out so much line that he was hoping there was enough! Anyway, thanks to a small snag in the line coming off the reel that hesitated for just a second, and that was all it took – the fish got away not only with the lure but also the flasher. So somewhere out there is a very flashy salmon. John was very disappointed as this was the fish he’s been waiting for all summer….Crown Royal on the rocks was the first request upon returning to the boat. The sun did come out again in the afternoon so we enjoyed a beautiful warm evening with grilled steaks and greek pasta salad for dinner. AND, our last bottle of “The Professors” – we are officially out of our wine -- egads! The wine in Canada we’ve found is mostly terrible and selection limited! We will have to endure these conditions I guess. We look forward to seeing our MBYC friends and drinking their good wine (haha!).

The avid fisherman, headed out again
