Day 58 – Chapin Bay to Petersburg - July 9, 2018

Today is my sister-in-law’s birthday – Happy Birthday Lisa! Even though yesterday was a long day of running, the weather forecast was favorable for crossing Frederick Sound, a large open body of water, so Captain John informed us we were going to cross today. As it turned out, it was a gorgeous day on the water, probably the most flat water we’ve had the entire trip. Beth and I even sat topside for a couple of hours enjoying the warm air and gorgeous scenery, once again surrounded by snow-capped spires. Many whale sightings – again - ho hum, (just kidding) as we made our way across the sound. The enormous Patterson Glacier was a stunning site to the north as we approached pretty Petersburg, the largest fishing port in Southeast Alaska, with the beautiful mountain range as its backdrop. We snagged a spot in the north harbor and once settled, we set out for a walk about town. Town is about 4 blocks long but very clean, so it didn’t take long. Petersburg was founded in the late 1800s by a Norweigian thus has a Viking theme to it. We sat outside in a little beer garden called “Inga’s” and had an afternoon beverage while the sun still graced the skies. Before dinner we cruised the surrounding harbors in the whaler looking at all the hundreds of busy fishing boats, as Wednesday the 11th is another opening for the fishermen. We found one from Bainbridge Island so stopped to talk hometown with them. We were moored next to boat that listed Jackson Hole, WY as its home port and lo and behold, the skipper knew Tristan Droppert, Beth and Marc’s son! Always such a small world. Dinner tonight was Lamb Chops from Costco, and a new recipe we tried “Lemony Asparagus and Artichoke Pasta Salad.”

The absolute cutest little fishing boat ever. Probably no more than 25'

All the small day fishing boats lined up in Petersburg harbor, this is just one row and there were many rows!

John thought we should name our little boat MS. CRAB, not because of my mood but because of my obsession with crabbing!
