Another early transit morning as we departed
Snug Cove for the run down and over to Takatz Bay. Hard to believe we are on
the way back down now, having been to the farthest point north of our trip. It
is still all new territory for us as we venture over to Sitka now, places we’ve
not been yet this summer. Nothing much today in the way of wildlife except for
a few humpback whale spouts in the distance and the occasional sea lion. More
sea lions up here than seals. We arrived around 1:30 at Takatz which is yet
another stunning anchorage. We motored back inside the long cove navigating around
quite a collection of submerged rocks to get to a beautiful small bay that
shoaled up into mud flats and grass. Bear country, again. We had noticed a few
deep holes on our way in, so after we got settled John and Paul went out into
the outer bay and tried to catch some halibut while Anne and I jigged off the
big boat. After losing my bait 4 times to something I finally landed a small
flounder or halibut, only about 14” – not legal and besides when we were
getting ready to release him he did one last flip and jumped off the hook. The
boys came back empty-handed, so John reset the gear and went out salmon fishing
with Anne – they promptly came back with 2 salmon that jumped on almost
immediately – they each caught one! Yay, salmon for dinner tomorrow, and more
salmon for the freezer! We celebrated with cocktails and hot artichoke dip,
then proceeded with dinner of grilled corn, greek salad, and grilled lamb
chops. After dinner we went for a ride around the bay which is absolutely
filled with eagles and watched them feed. We spotted a grizzly on shore but
once again couldn’t get close enough for good pictures because of the mud
flats. But we watched him through the binoculars for a while. This bay has
gorgeous waterfalls and high snowfields seemingly rising straight out of the
water, it is a definite stop for future trips.
These photos were enhanced by Paul using Lightroom which I am just learning to use. My camera tends to overexpose everything so he helped me add color back into these, so they are nice and vivid. ***Fish Size has not been altered*** (haha)
