Woke
up at 2:30AM to the sound of a wolf howling! So cool. Up again at a reasonable
hour to be greeted by dense fog, again, but by 10AM the skies were clearing
quickly and we set off on another leisurely day of cruising up to the Margerie
Glacier again so our family could see it. We cruised by Gloomy Knob and the bay
where we saw the Grizzly Bear a couple days ago…but neither produced this time
– such a bummer! But we were rewarded with increasingly warm sunshine and no
winds so that by the time we reached the glacier everyone was topside basking
in the sun, it was absolutely glorious and really rather hot. We hovered there
for about an hour simply enjoying the warmth and watching the calving glacier. While
we were hovering, Spencer got a little gleam in his eye and disappeared below
only to reappear in his bathing suit. We all grabbed our cameras and watched as
he dove into the iceberg riddled water. He came to the surface with a loud
“WHOOO!” and immediately scrambled back onto the boat as we cheered him on.
Crazy youth! Although I’m guessing my crazy 60+ year old brothers would have
done the same thing, not to mention my equally crazy son Jordan who never backs
down from a dare! Our anchorage that evening was back in Reid Inlet and this
time, I have to say, my opinion was changed – it was really beautiful. Probably
because there was no wind this time, it was warm out, and we were greeted by a
humpback whale circling the cove feeding on the shoreline. The whale came back
twice after that, later in the evening, and then after we went to bed. John and
I could hear him surface right next to the boat, then again on the other side
of the boat as our stateroom has portholes on both sides that we keep open. It
was a 5 star day. Not going to try and label all these photos today.
