Day 7 - Fury Cove to Pruth Bay - May 19, 2018

We got to sleep in! It’s our 11th wedding anniversary today, what a treat to wake up in this beautiful place. John brought me coffee in bed which was very sweet.  We pulled out of Fury Cove around 8:30am this morning out into the Fitz Hugh Sound headed north, a short jaunt to Pruth Bay just a 2 hour run today. Once again we have calm seas, how lucky can we be! Although this is relatively protected, we are told that it can whip up in here too under foul conditions. Thankful.  There are just a handful of other boats up this way, most of whom are either going to Alaska or Haida Gwaii, a large island 65 miles off the coast of BC. So you hear the same folks on the radio during your travels and get to know one another along the way. Today we might put down our crab pots in our quest to hunt and gather, and if all else fails we have a freezer full of food from Costco. Shannon has organized a weenie roast lunch on the beach today at Pruth complete with s’mores. Pruth is a very protected bay at the north end of Calvert Island. Apparently it is tradition to hike to the other side of the Island and have a weenie roast on the beach which is situated on the open Pacific ocean.

UPDATE: the hike to the other side went well and we had our beach fire and roasted weenies and s’mores. There is a marine research institute here in the harbor, very beautiful facility. We talked to the guy running it who told us some of the things they are studying like the sudden death of the starfish, the health of the kelp, the glacial runoff effects, all sorts of things. Of interest he said that life was thriving on this island as far back as 14,000 years ago and there is evidence at low tide of rock arrangements for sophisticated clam farms where the native population terraced the beaches to make more room for flat sandy surfaces to grow clams. They also said to put our crab pots down right here in the bay at 10-20 meters, but we never got around to it today…..we might try tomorrow. Shannon put hers down today but I don’t think she’s picked them up yet. We had a light and short lived rain storm today.  Tonight John and I are eating dinner on our own boat for our anniversary, we are having stuffed chicken breasts from guess where, yes…Fischer Meats, another first.  We may go fishing soon for bottom fish. Will report later if we catch any. Over and out.
